Sleek and social, river otters bring a sense of mischief to Montana's clean waterways. Few states offer a window into wild America quite like Montana.

Otters are a sign of healthy, well-connected river systems.

What sets it apart

They hunt fish and crayfish along undercut banks. That detail is easy to overlook, but it helps explain the pull this place has on Montanans and visitors alike.

Winter finds them sliding across ice and snow between open holes.

Why it matters

Step back, and a bigger picture comes into focus: this is Montana in miniature, rugged and unhurried. Give these animals room, and the reward is a glimpse of a wilder, older America.
